Designer Statement: I believe that empathy serves as the radiant core of exceptional design, much like the sun at the center of our universe. It illuminates the path toward positive social change. This belief inspires my unwavering commitment to projects that amplify marginalized voices. While my design journey began in advertising, it has expanded into Visual and UI Design, Design Research, and Design Education.
Rooted in collaboration, critical thinking, and social justice advocacy, my design process thrives. It champions playfulness, storytelling, cultural diversity, multifaceted views, and self-directed learning. These principles, like the cosmic dance of celestial bodies, underpin my teaching philosophy, capturing the essence of my design approach.
The visual concept of the poster draws inspiration from the Sufi Concept known as the "Unity of Being," signifying the fundamental oneness that underlies all existence. In the state of Unity of Being, the recognition dawns that the perceived diversity and multiplicity in the world are mere illusions, and everything fundamentally expresses the divine essence. In a cosmological context, this concept suggests that the universe is not an assortment of separate entities but rather a manifestation of a singular divine reality.
Sufi cosmology often incorporates symbolic and allegorical interpretations of celestial phenomena, steering away from a purely mechanistic or deterministic outlook. Celestial events are seen as metaphors for divine attributes and manifestations, commonly visualized through the symbolism of circles. Guerresi elucidates the significance of the circle in Sufi ritual, attributing the words to Ibn al-‘Arabi: "Each thing and each being is a circle because it returns to its Origins." (Prearo 2006, pp. 176–77). Guerresi extends this interpretation, describing circles as a metaphorical representation of numerous worlds and constellations. These circles symbolize the unity of inner beauty and aesthetic appearance, representing infinity in a mystical union with the divine universe, expanding and contracting like a breath. This circular motion resembles a perpetual spiral, leading to the dissolution of the self into divine beauty and the pursuit of mystical knowledge, encapsulated in the quest for 'interior illumination.'
Consequently, the design of the artwork positions Design at the core of multiple interconnected key principles (collaboration, critical thinking, playfulness, etc.) shaping my design approach. However, each element within the design is concurrently shaped by my accumulated design knowledge, resulting in an ongoing spiral that continually evolves my design sensibilities.
